Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Work with a team of engineers and scientist to create first-of-its-kind prototypes and demonstrators for innovative technology in architected materials, adaptive structures, and microsystems with applications in automotive, aerospace and defense industries. Positions are currently available for developing novel material systems for in-space manufacturing and assembly. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: * Teamwork with a diverse group of engineers and scientists executing on a research program * Electromechanical design using computer software for CAD, FEA. * Interface with machine shops and parts vendors for procurement of hardware that meet design intent * Hands-on prototyping, assembly, instrumentation and test for characterization of design performance * Material coupon preparation and characterization * Clearly document and report progress and key results to the team MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The candidate should be familiar with CAD, Finite Element Analysis, and basic electromechanical theory commensurate with a Bachelors of Science degree or higher. The candidate should also have some prior experience with electromechanical design and hands-on prototyping and testing. Experience with advanced lab instrumentation, automation and material characterization is a plus. For example: coupon or test article preparation and characterization using analytical equipment such as XRD and SEM. Experience with automation, control and robotic systems is a plus. For example: feed-back control of a reel-to-reel process for precise coating control. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: The candidate must be capable of working on-site, safely in a laboratory and performing extended analysis at computer workstations. EDUCATION DESIRED:Bachelor''s or Master''s degree in materials, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or related field. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Ability to obtain a security clearance is a plus. This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a ''U.S. Person'' as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required.
