Division of University Advancement is one of five central divisions
of the university whose primary purpose is to enhance the private
support and knowledge of the university. This is accomplished by
initiating programs, events and activities that stimulate the
involvement and interest of alumni, friends, parents, corporations
and foundations to develop relationships that will foster and
stimulate giving to the university. The office the Vice President
of University Advancement oversees the offices of development,
alumni and external relations, advancement services. government and
community relations and annual giving. The division manages and
operates the Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundations which serves
as the official entity to receive and manage all contributions to
the University.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Government Relations
- Under the guidance and direction of the AVP of GCR, the
Director of GCR - Cultivates relationships with elected officials
at the local, state, and federal levels, and their staff to promote
the university's key initiatives and CSU's legislative priorities
and raise the visibility of the university's impact in workforce
and economic development and other industry and policy areas.
- Manages visits and events (campus-based or otherwise),
including logistics and materials preparation, where elected
officials and their staff are in attendance.
- Drafts issue papers, briefing materials, presentations,
newsletters, and other communications materials to support
department and university work.
- Assists the AVP of GCR in working with the college deans, the
Office of Research and Innovation, and other campus partners to
manage the university's relationships with a variety of
governmental agencies, strategizing and securing extramural funding
requests (community project funding, grants, etc.).
- Assists in preparing reports, correspondence, and briefing
materials relating to legislative and policy issues at the local,
state, and federal levels.Community Relations
- Assists with development and implementation of a comprehensive
community relations plan to promote the university's effective
participation in the local and regional community and reaffirm the
university as a steward of place.
- Identifies appropriate opportunities for the university to
support or partner with campus or external community to support
local events and initiatives.
- Assists in the development of an external engagement strategy
and community outreach plan to support land use and development
projects and work across the institution to ensure coordination
with other key internal stakeholders.
- Manages visits and events (campus-based or otherwise),
including logistics and materials preparation, with or in
partnership with community organizations.
- Proactively escalates community concerns to AVP of GCR as it
relates to campus activities and operations.
- Assists in the cultivation of relationships with regional
economic development agencies and staff to promote the university's
impact in job creation, occupational training, and business
development.
- Represent the university's interests at public meetings and
forums as applicable.
- Perform other related duties as assigned

- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or
university
- 5 years of experience in government relations, community
relations, political campaigns, strategic communications, or
similar fields.
- Experience staffing and managing senior leadership, and
exhibiting diplomacy while working with diverse
constituencies.
- Strategic leader with demonstrated understanding of political
processes (local, state, and federal) and ability to integrate
policy into organizational strategy.
- Strong research and analytical skills and exceptional oral and
written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with government officials, community representatives,
business, and other key constituencies.PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
- Knowledge of state and federal government issues related to
higher education.
- Strong interpersonal communication, analytical, organizational
and presentation skills.
- Ability to handle several high-priority projects simultaneously
and meet deadlines.
